Alexander Lukashenko: Javier Solana’s visit will help improve Belarus-EU relations
The visit of Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, to Minsk will contribute to better relations between Belarus and the European Union and speed up the rapprochement between our country and the EU, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko told reporters as he visited the Minsk Motor Plant.
According to the head of state, the negotiations were fruitful.
Alexander Lukashenko underlined that the meeting with the Secretary General was held on a good level and concluded very positively. “The results of the talks are good, I am satisfied with them, we could not even hope for such a positive outcome before,” the President said.
The Belarusian head of state pointed out that Javier Solana is one of the most experienced negotiators of foreign policy matters. In the words of Alexander Lukashenko, the most important result of the talks is that Javier Solana did not set a single condition. The meeting featured the prospects, the meaning of Belarus for Europe. “Europe understands that, it is important that Javier Solana is happy about the outcome of the negotiations. I am glad about it, that means that our position is understood,” the President said.
Alexander Lukashenko added that the global financial crisis disillusioned many people; it made them have a more realistic approach. “Now Europe does not see its future without Belarus. This is why I am satisfied with the results; no additional terms were set for us. We understand and know what we should do and what Europe should do to get closer and become good and true partners. I am totally convinced that the visit of Javier Solana will benefit our relations,” the head of state said.
